Nancy Pelosi, who has to pass bills to find out what's in them, wonders where the attitude of lawlessness in America comes from
Maybe from being "not a serious country"?

The US House passed the $2.5 trillion increase to the debt ceiling in the dead of night with just one, unneeded, Republican vote
The bill, which lawmakers passed 221-209, with one Republican voting yes, raises the federal debt ceiling by $2.5 trillion to increase the limit to close to $31 trillion.
More.
Adam Kinzinger was the lone Republican vote in the House:
Representative Adam Kinzinger was the only Republican lawmaker who voted with Democrats in the House to raise the debt ceiling, staving off a potentially disastrous federal default.
Last week, Kinzinger was also the only Republican to back the Democrats over the plan struck by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) allowing Senate Democrats to lift the ceiling through a simple majority vote.
The Illinois congressman, one of 10 Republicans to vote for the second impeachment of ex-President Donald Trump after the Capitol insurrection and one of only two GOP lawmakers on the January 6 committee investigating the riots that day, will not be standing for re-election in the 2022 midterms.
LOL lunatic New York City to ban natural gas connections after 2027 to reduce CO2 emissions by 0.036% by 2040
The commie Mayor Bill de BlowMyNoseio calls this a critical step to fight back against climate change on the local level and guarantee a green city for generations to come.
North America emitted 5.78 BILLION tons in 2020. The NYC reduction over 12 years will come to just 2.1 MILLION tons.
No projection was given for the reduction in population this will produce in NYC.
However, states like Texas and Arizona have barred cities from implementing such changes, citing that consumers have the right to pick their energy sources.

US Senate Democrats passed a $2.5 trillion increase to the debt ceiling 50-49 this afternoon without a single Republican vote after 14 Republicans voted to allow a one time simple majority arrangement
Seems like there's not much wiggle room between a $2.5 trillion increase in the debt ceiling and a proposed Democrat reconciliation spending bill now coming in at $1.75 trillion.

First 12 days of December: 15,074 US COVID deaths in 2021 vs. 29,950 in 2020
The down trend for deaths, 13% down Apr-Nov year over year, continues down very strongly in December.

Booster protection against Omicron is four times lower than against Delta, and basically non-existent if you've had only two shots
Those who received the second dose did not have any neutralization ability against the variant, while they continued to have some ability against Delta and even the original Wuhan strain.
“There was no neutralization ability whatsoever, and that is very worrisome,” said Dr. Gili Regev-Yochay, director of the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Unit at the hospital, in a briefing on Saturday night, adding that these people might also be exposed to serious disease. ...
On the other hand, the Sheba study found that the booster dose does increase the ability of the vaccine to work against Omicron by about 100-fold, meaning that there is “significant protection,” Regev Yochay said. “It is lower than the neutralizing ability against the Delta – about four times lower. But it is very optimistic.”
Kinda hard for the country to have a sense of urgency about 800k COVID-19 deaths when we kill that many and more unborn every year
Americans are inured to death.
“Sometime in the next two days we’re going to pass a terrible milestone in this country, when the 800,000th person in this country dies of this virus,” Reiner said. “This virus killed more people in this country than any single war has. The Civil War killed 655,000 Americans, we’re about to pass 800,000. But I don’t see a war footing. Where is the war footing? Where is the sense of urgency in this country?”

LOL Chris Wallace leaves FOX for CNN after development of recent big opening
I hope they do a better job of vetting his producer than they did for Fredo.
This is CNN: Fredo's Connecticut pal with the Pope doll has been indicted for unlawful sexual activity with a female minor from Nevada (and her mother apparently), aka pedophilia and child-sex-trafficking
Fredo was fired from CNN a week ago for violating the standards of JoUrNoMaLiSm.
But The Atlantic, December 9, 2021, wants you to know it is THE GREAT (FAKE) CHILD-SEX-TRAFFICKING EPIDEMIC.
Omicron variant is roundly defeating the fully-vaccinated in statistically robust Denmark, AND THE BOOSTED
The first Omicron infection in Denmark was detected in a sample from Nov 22. Since then, 1,280 cases have been recorded, and Omicron represented 4.5-5 per cent of all Covid-19 infections in the country in the beginning of this week. ... almost 75 per cent of those infected by Omicron had received 2 doses of Covid-19 vaccine. ... the Danish data shows more than 100 Omicron cases were discovered among the 19.3 per cent of Danes who have received booster shots.
Denmark was 70% fully-vaccinated by August 24th.
COVID-19 hospitalizations have actually fallen slightly in Denmark since November 22.
The case fatality rate in the world to date is 3.6 times higher than it is in Denmark, in the USA to date almost 3 times higher than it is in Denmark.
Vaccinologist more worried about fakers spreading C19 than the New Zealander who was paid by them to get the C19 jab 10 TIMES in their stead
Vaccinologist and associate professor Helen Petousis-Harris called the behavior “unbelievably selfish” and taking advantage of somebody who needs some money. It could cause serious harm from the people who are not vaccinated, saying they are, and spreading the virus, she said. Prof Petousis-Harris said the man who took multiple doses of the COVID-19 vaccine is unlikely to come to any serious harm, but likely to feel crap the next day from a general immune response. “We know that people have in error been given the whole five doses in a vial instead of it being diluted, we know that has happened overseas, and we know with other vaccines errors have occurred and there has been no long-term problems,” she said. But Prof Petousis-Harris said receiving multiple doses of the Covid-19 vaccine is not ideal, saying when people get given higher doses, they get more fever, pains and headaches.
Oh those evil people who say they are vaccinated when they are not! They are the spreaders, not us!
Warped.

Jim Dover, president and CEO of Sparrow Health in Michigan, makes a preposterous claim, says Michigan "continues to have variant after variant grow and expand across the state" when only Delta dominates
CNN:
"Michigan is not one of the highest vaccination states in the nation. So it continues to have variant after variant grow and expand across the state," he said.
They move the goalposts so fast with these C19 vaccine recommendations it's hard even for Fauci to keep up: "Fully-vaccinated" to disappear in favor of annual shots
Just as with Trump, if you don't test you don't have cases!
Amid criticism from global health officials, Fauci argued that the COVID-19 vaccines should have been viewed as a three-shot regimen from the "get-go."
Three months later and Fauci is now hedging on that. He shape-shifts faster than a Terminator.
Fauci said the official definition of “fully vaccinated” is in some ways semantic, but important as a guidepost for the various vaccination requirements that employers, businesses, and other organizations have implemented. ... “As a public health person, I just say get your third shot,” Fauci said. “Forget about what the definition is. I just want to see people be optimally protected.”
The reason?
Some health experts are less sure — especially with the emergence of omicron — predicting it will be more like a flu vaccine where the shots are typically recommended on an annual basis.
“If that becomes the case, then ‘fully vaccinated’ becomes a term that’s sort of less useful, because there is no ‘fully vaccinated,'” Stephen Kissler, a Harvard infectious disease researcher, told reporters on a conference call this week. “Basically, how recently have you been vaccinated becomes the question.”
Here's a news flash for ya:
No one's going to get 3 shots every year.
You can hardly get people to take the one for influenza. The average for adults in the last decade was barely 42%.
They are going to have to come up with something else, something that actually works and doesn't come with terrible side-effects.
Or maybe Omicron is a sign the virus will just save us all the trouble, by becoming less deadly over time.
The answer to COVID-19 is not 42.

Tucker Carlson is another one who thinks America will be to blame for a Russian invasion of Ukraine, omitting certain uncomfortable truths
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2021/12/08/tucker_carlson_ukrainian_lobbyists_have_all_of_washington_heading_for_war.html
Tucker omits that Russia lost the Sevastopol naval base to Ukraine from 1991-2014 after the fall of the USSR, after which Putin took it back by force in the annexation of Crimea, an act of aggression unanswered by Obama. But Russia had paid rent to Ukraine for use of the base during that intervening period. It's not like they were or are entitled to it, Tucker.
George W. Bush set the precedent for all that in the first place by not answering Russia's aggression in South Ossetia in 2008.
Tucker also omits that Germany is hostage to Russian natural gas by choice, having embraced the madness of green ideology and abandoning their own sources of energy.
This spirit and habit of appeasement shouldn't be continued or encouraged, especially one in the service of a banal, libertarian, materialistic understanding of "American interests".
Sean Davis of The Federalist only pretends that wars in Ukraine and Taiwan will be wars of our choosing
We can bolster the defenses of these nominally free states in order to prevent Russia and China from attacking them, or we can do what he says and do nothing, inviting their demise.

Michigan's top epidemiologist, Sarah Lyon-Callo, falsely states "vaccines make a big difference in terms of community spread"
They do not.
Treating the vaccines like a panacea in order to get more people vaccinated has been a huge mistake.
These "experts" have totally oversold the vaccines, promising the moon.
Countless people have become infected as a result, and many have died.
Michigan achieved 50% fully vaccinated on August 24th, the level at which Anthony Fauci at least three times indicated would be sufficient to guarantee that there would not be another surge.
The experts couldn't have been more wrong.
This investigation highlights that the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 can spread quickly through a highly vaccinated population and can be transmitted to others regardless of vaccination status. ... our findings underscore the need for persons who are fully vaccinated to take precautions to prevent transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to themselves and others, such as wearing a mask in public indoor settings or crowded outdoor settings, particularly during substantial or high transmission. Vaccination, although critical to reduce illness and death from COVID-19, should be complemented by layered mitigation strategies to address the COVID-19 pandemic (25,31).
CNN quotes Pfizer today lying to our faces that its vaccines are the best way to stop the spread of C19 when the latest from the CDC screams NO!
This investigation highlights that the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 can spread quickly through a highly vaccinated population and can be transmitted to others regardless of vaccination status. Although vaccination remains a key mitigation strategy to decrease illness and death associated with COVID-19 (25), the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 is highly transmissible (26), and several studies have suggested lower vaccine effectiveness during Delta variant predominance compared with earlier months (5–7,27), probably driven by waning immunity from increased time since vaccination (28). In this outbreak, 99% of cluster-associated cases that had available sequencing were caused by the Delta variant, and 81% of cluster-associated cases were classified as vaccine breakthrough infections. The large number of breakthrough infections is probably representative of a highly vaccinated underlying population; as a greater proportion of the US population becomes fully vaccinated, vaccine breakthrough infections are likely to be more frequently observed (27,29). ...
In conclusion, major epidemiologic questions about breakthrough infections, such as the comparative infectiousness of fully vaccinated and non–fully vaccinated persons, duration of viral shedding, and duration of vaccine-derived immunity, remain. However, our findings underscore the need for persons who are fully vaccinated to take precautions to prevent transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to themselves and others, such as wearing a mask in public indoor settings or crowded outdoor settings, particularly during substantial or high transmission. Vaccination, although critical to reduce illness and death from COVID-19, should be complemented by layered mitigation strategies to address the COVID-19 pandemic (25,31).

LOL, The Grauniad thinks it's in the Vanguard of the press, having few scruples about printing Trump's four years filled with swearing, obviously doesn't read POLITICO
Here where it can't even bring itself to spell them out:
In
remarks to diners at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Saturday
night, Donald Trump called the American media “crooked ba**ards” and Gen
Mark Milley, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, a “fu**ing
idiot”. ...
Trump’s penchant for swearing is well-known, to the extent that his four-year presidency prompted soul-searching among some US media outlets about which words could properly be printed.
The Guardian has long had few such scruples.
POLITICO in October:
Behind closed doors, the former Catholic school boy is quite profane, according to several current and former aides.
“When he gets going he definitely gets going,” said one White House official.
In meetings with aides, Biden’s vulgarities include but are not limited too: “Fuck them,” “What the fuck are we doing?” “Why the fuck isn’t this happening?” “bullshit,” “dammit,” or just simply: “fuck,” according to several current and former aides.
When pushing aides for better answers, he will sometimes say, “don't bullshit a bullshitter.”
Some say they find Biden’s foul mouth endearing — a part of his everyman appeal that made him president. One former aide noted that’s true just as long as you’re not on the receiving end of it.
By contrast, Vice President KAMALA HARRIS’ favorite swear word is “motherfuck-ah,” [emphasis on the ahhhhh] according to someone who worked closely with her. She also alluded to this preference in a past interview. Her office did not respond.
Trump is the idiot who elevated the idiot Mark Milley in the first place, Raheem, you idiot

Omicron variant looks very likely to overcome natural immunity from previous infection
Very few people in South Africa have been fully vaccinated, relatively speaking, roughly a quarter of the population.
So the very rapid rise in new cases there looks likely to include the very large number of the previously infected.
Daily new cases in the 7-day rolling average have absolutely soared, from about 290 in mid-November to almost 8900 by Dec 4.
There have been almost 2.8 million infections pre-Omicron, and fewer than 1.3% had been reinfected pre-Omicron, according to the new paper discussed in detail here:
LOL, just 20 cases of Omicron in the US but Anthony Fauci is already confident of "community spread"
“We absolutely have community spread in this country,” Dr. Anthony Fauci told Bloomberg Television on Friday. “We don’t know how many of them, but there’s no doubt there’s community spread.”
Fauci was nothing but the picture of doubt on spread on Jan 28, 2020 when there were already over 6,000 cases in the world:
He also addressed concerns about whether the virus could be easily spread by asymptomatic carriers. "The driver of respiratory outbreaks is symptomatic people, not asymptomatic carriers," said Fauci.
Video shows him saying this most emphatically:
“In all the history of respiratory-borne viruses of any type, asymptomatic transmission has never been the driver of outbreaks. … Even if there’s a rare asymptomatic person that might transmit, an epidemic is not driven by asymptomatic carriers.”
By June 10, 2020 Fauci wasn't saying that anymore and had completely reversed himself:
“In fact, the evidence we have given the percentage of people, which is about 25% [to] 45%, of the totality of infected people likely are without symptoms,” he said. “And we know from epidemiological studies that they can transmit to someone who is uninfected even when they are without symptoms.”
Waiting for the evidence on Omicron?
Fuhgettaboudit.
Flashback Sunday: Anthony Fauci Feb 17, 2020 said "there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to wear a mask", danger from coronavirus is "just minuscule"
He couldn't have been more wrong, and on both counts no less.
Coronavirus went on to kill far more than flu ever has since 1918, and other "experts" now chalk up those low flu numbers partly to mask-wearing.
USA AWAY, here in Feb 2020:
"If you look at the masks that you buy in a drug store, the leakage around that doesn't really do much to protect you," he said. "People start saying, 'Should I start wearing a mask?' Now, in the United States, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to wear a mask." ...
Fauci doesn't want people to worry about coronavirus, the danger of which is "just minuscule." But he does want them to take precautions against the "influenza outbreak, which is having its second wave."
Coronavirus went on to kill 346,000 in the USA in 2020, but the flu killed just 700 over the entire 2020-2021 season.
The irony is the experts quoted by Scientific American now attribute the low number of flu deaths to mask wearing and social distancing, both of which Fauci only later embraced to stop coronavirus, but which has now gone on to kill an additional 440,000 despite those measures and mass vaccination:
Since the novel coronavirus began its global spread, influenza cases reported to the World Health Organization from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres have dropped to minute levels. The reason, epidemiologists think, is that the public health measures taken to keep the coronavirus from spreading—notably mask wearing and social distancing—also stop the flu.
Prevalence of COVID-19 in 2020 was just 6.1% of population (20m cases in 328m people) because it didn't really hit the country until March. In 2021 to date, prevalence is higher at 8.7% (28.923m cases in 332m people), about the level typical for influenza in an average year.
Why, when people have been masking, social distancing, and getting vaccinated?
Clearly something(s) has(have) stopped influenza, but the definitive transmission mechanism of coronavirus remains unsolved.
Similarly no one so far has explained how white tail deer populations have become riddled with coronavirus: We do not know how the deer were exposed to SARS-CoV-2.
A new Penn State study is pretty certain hunters are somehow responsible:
“The viral lineages we identified correspond to the same lineages circulating in humans at that time,” said Kapur. “The fact that we found several different SARS-CoV-2 lineages circulating within geographically confined herds across the state suggests the occurrence of multiple independent spillover events from humans to deer, followed by local deer-to-deer transmission. This also raises the possibility of the spillback from deer back to humans, especially in exurban areas with high deer densities.”
But I doubt it's because they breathed on them out there in the woods.
The vectors must be human urine and feces, but to this day no one is focusing on those to explain the continuing crisis.

49.35% worked full time in Nov 2021, a new high for the year, vs. 50.52% two years ago at this time: Millions could be working who are not
That works out to 3.1 million missing full time jobs in Nov 2021 compared to Nov 2019 at current population.
We went from adding 1.7 million W-2s in 2019 to subtracting 1.7 million in 2020, a gap of 3.4 million.
Overall in 2021 to date full time has averaged 48.55% of civilian noninstitutional population, still much below the 50.4% average level in 2019.
Potential missing full time is at least 11.1 million at current population level.
The good times get smaller and smaller and smaller in the rear view mirror.

LOL, my doctor makes me sign this
"I am aware that the practice of medicine and surgery is not an exact science and I acknowledge that no guarantees or promises have been made to me as to the results of the care and treatment, which I have hereby authorized."
On the other hand, COVID-19 wasn't even mentioned at the visit, so there's that.
Though 13% less deadly in the US overall, both Alpha and Delta in 2021 have been much more transmissible than the 2020 virus types
The UK variant dominated in the US from April-June 2021. It spawned an average of 34,793 cases per day, 28% higher than the 27,128 cases per day average for Apr-Jun 2020.
The India variant dominated in the US from July 1, 2021, and still does. Average cases per day for the five months Jul-Nov 2021 were 97,449, 35% higher than the 71,932 cases per day average for Jul-Nov 2020.
The data is once again consistent with the theory that viruses evolve to survive at the expense of killing ability.
People who credit the vaccines for killing fewer people, however, must face the fact that the vaccines did nothing to reduce the increased spread of either variant.
That point needs to be underscored. Vaccinated people who abandoned all precautions are just as culpable as unvaccinated people who abandoned all precautions for making themselves vectors for the disease. US authorities at every level have failed to emphasize this, but especially the CDC, which has known since the July 4th Provincetown incident that vaccination does nothing to stop transmission. Instead they have treated the vaccines as a panacea, when they obviously are not.
For all we know, deaths are down because the variants are less deadly, or because of improved treatment methods in hospitals and outpatient settings, or because of slight but effective changes to behavior, or because the low hanging fruit is already dead, or because of some combination of these.
But one thing is for sure, the variants are spreading like crazy despite mass vaccination.
US COVID-19 deaths from Alpha and Delta April-November 2021 were 13% lower than Apr-Nov 2020
229,185 vs. 263,727
The UK variant dominated in the US April-June, and the India variant dominated from July 1 and still does.
The data is consistent with the theory that viruses evolve to survive at the expense of killing ability.

Stephen L. Miller, aka redsteeze, prefers alternative C19 facts when it suits his rhetorical purposes against Anthony Fauci
He’s not referring to the science of, say, the human manipulation of viruses that can lead to a global pandemic, research Fauci once said he believed was worth the risk. Or to the science that has possibly led to eleven million deaths worldwide and altered the lives of every citizen of every industrialized nation on the planet. ... He’s not going to be prosecuted. He’s not going to prison, no matter how many Twitter users crow about it. He will, however, be judged by science, real science, when this is all over. And the real science shows that eleven million people and counting have died so far.
The guy is nothing if not weird. It's almost like he has 6 million on the brain or something. 6 million + 5 million = 11 million. I dunno.
Canada's phony Native American Carrie Bourassa, aka Morning Star Bear, exposed as of Russian, Polish, and Czechoslovakian heritage, not Métis, Anishinaabe, or Tlingit
Carrie Bourassa, a public health expert who served as scientific
director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Institute of
Indigenous Peoples’ Health, was suspended on Nov. 1, five days after the

But when pressed to provide evidence of Native American heritage, Bourassa suddenly changed her story — saying that she had been adopted into the Métis community by an unnamed Métis friend of her deceased grandfather, Clifford Laroque.

Michigan, last 30 days: Breakthrough cases 28%, breakthrough hospitalizations 29%, breakthrough deaths 25%, yet the author and the doctor quoted in the very same article just lie about it
They're all pretending the vaccines aren't failing:
"It's almost exclusively unvaccinated," Dr. Matthew Sims, director of infectious disease research for Beaumont Health, told The Detroit News during a Sunday break of caring for COVID-19 patients. "And I can tell you the numbers that we've seen by me and my partners in the last couple of days have gone up." ...
The vast majority of COVID-19 patients are unvaccinated, according to the state. In the last 30 days of data (Oct. 14-Nov. 12), 72% of cases, 71% of hospitalizations and 75% of deaths were among individuals who were not fully vaccinated.
"Mostly critically ill, just like most of the patients admitted, are unvaccinated," Sims said. "We certainly know how to treat it better than we did at the beginning. We have new medications, but once a person gets sick, there's only so much we can do." ...
About 71% of residents aged 16 and older have received first doses of a vaccine.
LOL Kevin Williamson: He had a such good sermon going and then suddenly took the inevitable left turn with it and crashed it into a ditch filled with gobbledygook
We who have been exiles must be the new mothers and new fathers to exiles. We who have been poor and hungry, who have been powerless, who have been dependent on the kindness of others, must be splendid in our own generosity. And we who have benefited from the example of the meekest of all the men who were upon the face of the Earth — we must not forget our true heritage — must not consent to be called the sons of Pharaoh’s daughter. This pilgrim republic, fearfully and wonderfully made, was made for better things and higher things. Wealth, power, reputation — these are, at best, means to some higher end, to be used judiciously and with gratitude but never with awe. These are our instruments — they must not be our gods.
Come out from among them, and be ye separate, Americans. Come home.
More.
It never occurs to Williamson that America as the New Israel pretty much did what the Old Israel did, invading the land flowing with milk and honey where they slew all the Canaanites.
Well, almost all of them. The failure of nerve which plagues America still, most obviously in Williamson, was present already at the beginning. Now the roles are reversed and it is the Injuns who ply US with alcohol and take all our money at the casinos.
Some analogies just shouldn't be pressed too hard unless you want to join the left in wringing your hands over what our forefathers did. Doing so only leads in one other direction: The Biblical imagery coheres better with the alt-right vision of America.
Cancel, or keep getting canceled until the country is no longer yours and your posterity's.

Michigan's growth of breakthrough hospitalizations and deaths through August has made it the poster child for vaccine failure as it sits atop all other states in the autumn outbreak
Aug 26: More than 20% of recent COVID cases, hospitalizations have been among Michigan’s fully vaccinated:
In the last 30 days, vaccinated individuals in Michigan have represented 23.4% cases, 28.1% of hospitalizations, and nearly 15.4% of COVID-19 deaths, according to data from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
More.
Even without reporting cases in the last two days Michigan remains #1 in the nation for daily new cases over the last two weeks.
Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties around Detroit remain ground zero for daily new cases.
The lack of reporting during Thanksgiving week is emblematic of Michigan's underlying laissez-faire attitude to life. It is under-vaccinated compared to the rest of the nation, and gave up on social distancing and masking months ago.
That's as true of its so-called conservatives as it is of its liberals, including the Democrat Attorney General Dana Nessel who got ignominiously drunk in public at the Michigan football game at the end of October, sans mask.
The government we deserve!
Suddenly 25% of C19 victims in Michigan are vaccinated, but WaPo won't say it that way
The unvaccinated made up about three-quarters of cases, hospitalizations and deaths in the 30 days ending Nov. 5, according to the state health department. About 54% of Michiganders are fully vaccinated, trailing the national figure of 59%.
More.
About? Sounds like it could be fewer than 75% unvaccinated, which would mean the vaccinated are more than 25%.
And why conflate cases, hospitalizations and deaths that way?
Because it's WaPo, that's why.
World Health Organization protects Xi Jinping's feelings, adopts Omicron for new South African variant B.1.1.529 instead of Nu or Xi
alpha beta gamma delta epsilon
zeta eta theta
iota kappa lambda mu nu
xi omicron pi
rho sigma tau upsilon
phi chi psi omega
This is the first thing you learn in Greek 101, the alphabet. You've got it down when you can say it from memory after lighting a match and you don't burn your fingers, which you will need to write all the funny letters.
Looks like WHO needs to retake the course, however.
This new South African variant, B.1.1.529, will be very confusing since almost a year ago there was a South African variant everyone got hysterical about but it didn't take over the world. The India variant did instead.
That South African variant (B.1.351), was beta, retroactively so designated at the end of May 2021 with all the variants, which is probably why no one remembers it.
The UK variant (B.1.1.7), dominant in the US in April, May, and June, is alpha.
The gamma variant (P.1), from Brazil, never amounted to much in the US, though that was fear-mongered, too.
The India variant (B.1.617.2) is delta, dominant in the US from July 1.
Epsilon covers variants from California, B.1.427/B.1.429.
Zeta is another Brazilian one, P.2.
Eta and iota cover variants from New York, B.1.526/B.1.525.
Theta was first detected in the Philippines, P.3.
Kappa's another one from India, B.1.617.1, as is B.1.617.3, which oddly hasn't its own Greek letter designation even though it's on radars.
Lambda is from Peru, C. 37.
Mu variants come from Colombia, B.1.621/B.1.621.1.
The WHO made the announcement about the B.1.1.529 variant out of Johannesburg, South Africa, passing over a letter many observers presumed would be next — “Nu” — as well as the subsequent letter, “Xi,” which composes part of Chinese leader Xi Jinping‘s name.

Looks like there won't be a magic pill for that, at least from Merck
Merck & Co said on Friday updated data from its study on its experimental COVID-19 pill showed the drug was less effective in cutting hospitalizations and deaths than previously reported.
The drugmaker said its pill showed a 30% reduction in hospitalizations and deaths, based on data from over 1,400 patients. In October, its data showed a roughly 50% efficacy, based on data from 775 patients. ...
The company filed for a U.S. authorization of the drug molnupiravir on Oct. 11, following the interim data.
Merck said on Friday the data on molnupiravir, developed with Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, had been submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ahead of a meeting of its expert advisers on Tuesday.
The FDA's scientists are expected to publish their briefing documents ahead of the meeting as early as Friday.
The panel is expected to vote whether to recommend that the agency authorize the oral capsules for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in adults who are at risk of severe disease.
A planned interim analysis of the data last month showed that 7.3% of those given molnupiravir twice a day for five days were hospitalized and none had died by 29 days after the treatment. That compared with a hospitalization rate of 14.1% for patients on placebo.
In the updated data, 6.8% of those given molnupiravir were hospitalized and one person died, while the other placebo group had a hospitalization rate of 9.7%.
