Byron York: After good week, GOP House campaigners aren't yet optimistic. But they are less pessimistic:

The improved GOP numbers appear to be the result of the much-discussed Kavanaugh Effect, referring to the recent confirmation of President Trump's second Supreme Court justice. But it's not just Kavanaugh. 

Ford testified Sep 27th. The Dem +5 lead vanished within a week in the biggest and best poll of likely voters out there. This was all Kavanaugh.

Somebody call the guy and tell him Dems were +5 on the day of Ford's testimony, September 27th. That lead had totally EVAPORATED by October 4th.

Its main interest on the one side claims to be fiscal probity, but vainly imagines that its reprobate self even wants smaller deficits. Under Bush 43, debt to the penny soared from $5.7 trillion to $10.7 trillion. In truth, conservatarianism only affects conservatism. Its real interest is in Bacchus.

There is much in the present political age about which I am uncertain. But there is one thing about which I am absolutely certain: President Trump is not my enemy, and too many progressives view me as theirs.

Given the enthusiasm for him from the Bush camp, I'm not optimistic.

I would consider it a victory if at the very least Kavanaugh abandoned Justice Kennedy's radical libertarianism, but only time will tell.

The new puritans at CBS News flatly lie about Kavanaugh's testimony

Brett Kavanaugh wrongly claimed he could drink legally in Maryland in high school:

"Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has repeatedly said that he was legally allowed to consume beer as a prep school senior in Maryland."

That's a flat out lie. Kavanaugh never testified that he was "legally allowed".

He copped to drinking beer while under age, that's all, and that seniors were legal . . . at the time about which he testified.

That's how every under age drinker gets it to this day.
