Wild guess: First US patient with coronavirus who has now recovered (Snohomish County, Washington man) is East Asian

The Snohomish County man went to an urgent care clinic on Jan. 19 with a cough and fever. He told the staff he had seen a health alert about the outbreak in China – that he had returned four days earlier from a trip to visit family in Wuhan.

South Korea's 2.5 million population city of Daegu in a panic over coronavirus superspreader at a church

Korea’s Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported 53 new cases of the virus on Thursday, following 20 a day earlier, taking the total across the country to 104. Of that national tally, 70 patients are from Daegu or nearby and the majority have been traced to an infected 61-year-old woman known as “Patient 31” who attended a church, a scenario that KCDC described as a “super-spreading event”. ... Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin told residents to stay indoors as he warned of likely further cases. ... Kwon cautioned that at least 90 more of the about 1,000 other people who attended services at the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony were also showing symptoms.

China didn't restrict travel soon enough: Between Jan 10-24 trips by rail jumped 17.2% year over year

There were already seven cases of untreatable viral pneumonia on Dec 30, 2019 at the Wuhan Central Hospital, according to now deceased Dr. Li Wenliang.

By Jan 23, 2020 830 confirmed cases and an unknown number of clinically diagnosable cases had piled up, at which time Wuhan in Hubei province was locked down.

Much too late.

From the CNBC update:

China’s railway operator said 210 million trips were taken in the 40 days of the Lunar New Year travel period from Jan. 10 to Feb. 18, state news agency Xinhua reported. That number marked a 48% decline from last year.

During roughly the first two weeks of the travel period, through Jan. 24 (Lunar New Year eve), 168 million trips were taken, an increase of 17.2% from the corresponding holiday travel season last year, the report said. For the remainder of the time period, rail trips fell 83.9%, the article said. The report noted the number of average daily trips during the latter period fell to 1.7 million from 11.2 million. — Cheng

Rush Limbaugh today sees an idiot in the Mini Mike Mirror and backs away thinking "Yeah, I'm pretty dumb and look at all the money I've got!"

I just don’t think he’s very bright, and I know that cuts against the grain so strongly because most people say, “My gosh, Rush, he’s got more money than you, more money than we got. He can’t be dumb and have that happen.” Ehhh. I think there’s a lot of these rich people, folks, that when it comes to flat-out common sense are just idiots.

Absence of non-East Asian coronavirus fatalities so far makes some wonder if there ever will be any

There are considerations other than genetic racial predisposition or vulnerability to infection, however.

As the Chinese are now reporting, the coronavirus infection affects older men much more than women. In the initial phase of infection in Wuhan, for example, 68% of patients were men. Strikingly, as recently as 2015, 68% of Chinese men were said to smoke cigarettes, making them predisposed to infection because of impaired lung health.

Still, no death so far has involved someone without East Asian ancestry, which may indicate, as with the SARS coronavirus epidemic in 2002-2004, that fear of a global pandemic resulting in millions of deaths may not be reasonable and that this may remain an East Asian epidemic. It could be that just as sub-Saharan Africa is responsible for 80% of genetic sickle cell disease China may be prone to respiratory disease for some as yet unknown genetic reason.

China liberalized case counts to include clinical diagnoses recently, so the death rate is already much lower

And on top of current skepticism about current data, we still don't know how many cases, or deaths, may not have been counted in the early period of the outbreak.

And we probably never will know.

There were 999 confirmed cases outside China as of this morning. That's what we'll have to watch.

LOL, what a shock: Chicom state capitalism has produced the most severe income inequality in the world, enriching The Party

According to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States, China has the world’s highest Gini coefficient, a measurement of inequality. The institute found the gap stemmed from structural problems with China’s political system. State capitalism has been effective in fueling growth in the economy, but worsened inequality because of its inefficient distribution. The downside of China’s state capitalism has been exposed.

NIH's Anthony Fauci says quarantine of 2,666 passengers and 1,045 crew on Diamond Princess cruise ship wasn't unreasonable but failed

"The quarantine process failed," Fauci said. "I'd like to sugarcoat it and try to be diplomatic about it, but it failed. People were getting infected on that ship. Something went awry in the process of the quarantining on that ship. I don't know what it was, but a lot of people got infected on that ship."

Whoa, overnight infections with coronavirus onboard quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship jump again, to 542 as tests come in on more of the 3,700 passengers and crew

Previous recent news reports had indicated approximately only 1,743 of the 3,700 passengers and crew had been tested.

The new test total is now 2,404.

The overall infection rate thus jumps to 14.6%, but the way this is being handled and reported is, let's just say, something only Gunney Highway could properly assess.

Chicoms report 72,436 cases of coronavirus infection, 1,868 deaths: Death rate rises to 2.57%

Contrast that with the US influenza data for 2017-18:

The overall burden of influenza for the 2017-2018 season was an estimated 45 million influenza illnesses, 21 million influenza-associated medical visits, 810,000 influenza-related hospitalizations, and 61,000 influenza-associated deaths.

Death rate: 0.136%.

Bloomberg is Stalin about to collectivize all the farms, run them with professionals, and starve us all to death

Death rate from coronavirus in China increases again, to 2.5%

There are 70,548 confirmed cases, and 1,770 deaths, according to Chinese authorities.

A 40% global pandemic and at this death rate would kill 74 million people worldwide, and about 8 million in the United States.

The Diamond Princess cruise ship, quarantined in Japan and with all passengers confined to cabin, has an infection rate of 9.6%, with 356 total cases of coronavirus out of approximately 3,700 passengers and crew and no deaths reported to date.

If the US observed similarly strict quarantine measures during a pandemic and achieved a similar infection rate of only 9.6%, there would eventually be roughly 32 million domestic cases of which about 800,000 would die at a 2.5% death rate, far surpassing total world deaths from influenza in a bad year.

The US has fewer than 1 million hospital beds available, dropping from 1.5 million in 1975 to about 931,000 as of 2017.

A pandemic in the US would present some of the same survivability issues faced by victims in China, where the sick are turned away simply for lack of space.

China reports coronavirus deaths jump to 1,665 and cases climb to 68,500

Get your affairs in order: If Harvard professor is correct about global coronavirus pandemic, expect 68-136 million deaths worldwide in 2020, dwarfing deaths from ordinary influenza

Harvard epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch told The Wall Street Journal that "it's likely we'll see a global pandemic" of coronavirus, with 40 to 70 percent of the world's population likely to be infected this year.

"What proportion of those will be symptomatic, I can't give a good number," added Lipsitch, who is the Director of the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Others have recently estimated that the virus could hit 60 to 80 percent of the world's population.

Current deaths from coronavirus officially are 1,523 out of 66,492 cases, a death rate of 2.29%.

Global population currently stands at 7.44 billion.

A 40% pandemic would infect 2.976 billion people, with 68.15 million deaths at a 2.29% death rate.

An 80% pandemic would infect 5.952 billion people, with 136.3 million deaths at a 2.29% death rate.

100 years ago this year the Spanish flu infected 500 million people, 27% of the world, killing at least 17 million, a minimum death rate of 3.4%.

Man-made virus theory of coronavirus as similar to HIV by Indian scientists withdrawn

Conspiracy theories spreading online have claimed that the virus, which has claimed almost 1,400 lives in China, was made as a biological weapon and released by accident. ... Its mutations appear to be natural evolution rather than any bizarre or unexpected changes, according to Dr Trevor Bedford at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. ... One of the triggers of the man-made virus theory was a scientific paper published by researchers in India which said the virus looked suspiciously similar to HIV. The paper has since been taken back but the rumours it started continue to circulate online.

Is George Will dead? 5 more years of Trump will mean more utter gridlock, the very definition of his brand of conservatism.

But George Will is nowhere to be found, and is seldom discussed.

Is he dead?

He of all people should be ECSTATIC that Trump and the Democrats keep fighting, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. After all, he continuously praised gridlock to high heaven when Barack Obama was president.

But George never appears in my copious, daily reviewing of who's who, saying what's what.

OK, I'm too cheap to pay for WaPo.

I also have standards.

The truth is the more the two sides fight, the fewer the opportunities they have to come together, "get something done" for the American people, and pick our pockets.

We've had way too much pocket picking.

Surely George Will must be keeping quiet these days, repentantly pondering the Ineffable Truth of Trump?

If you plan to vote for Trump in November, dear KAGA, remember to make sure you split your vote to keep Republicans from controlling the US House.

It is under the circumstances Nancy Pelosi at the helm in the House who makes Trump great again, every frickin' day after all, along with Cocaine Mitch in the Senate.

Little new bad spending should pass if this arrangement is maintained indefinitely.

Honestly, don't make me laugh. Kevin McCarthy is not an alternative.

Chuckie Schumer?

A horror show on two legs.

We need more of the current gridlock so that the US Senate judge confirmation machine keeps on spitting out Trump appointments, the only thing Trump seems relatively good at.

So vote for Martha McSally in AZ, for example, who beat Bernie Sanders to the punch when she recently called CNN's Manu Raju a political hack.

Times that try men's souls bring out the best in heroes, and Martha has risen to the occasion. Yes, a brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt! from the gun of her A-10 Warthog would have been better, but hey, politics is war by different means.

The best part of Martha winning won't simply be warming a seat along with loser Bernie in the US Senate, but when every time he votes not to confirm a judge she does, and nothing much else gets done.

We must continue to keep George happy, and silent.

Yep, Bernie's a communist who literally wants to seize the means of production

The only thing saving industrial production in this country since 2007, up less than 5%, has been fracking to mine oil and gas

It has had little to do with Trump or Obama either way, political support or no political support.

The only thing giving an additional recent boost to oil and gas was the 2015 bipartisan agreement to end the oil export ban, signed by Obama.

Industrial production from all mining categories is up almost 17% 2015-2019, and a whopping 53% 2007-2019.

Industrial production from coal mining, a subset of this like oil and gas, is down over 39% since 2007, and 21% since 2015 despite Trump's promise to restore the industry. Industrial production from base metals mining is up less than 3% since 2007. Industrial production from gold and silver mining is down almost 15%.

Industrial production from crude oil mining is up a whopping 140% since 2007, and from natural gas 79% from 2007 through November 2019 on an average basis.

Otherwise it's a sorry picture.

Industrial production from manufacturing is down 1.3% 2007-2019, despite Trump running on bringing manufacturing back to the United States.

And industrial production from electric and gas utilities has grown a paltry 2% 2007-2019.

It's all mining of crude oil and natural gas.

If the anti-capitalist climate kooks get their way, we're all in big trouble.

Democrat political hack tells the truth about Bernie, but will anyone listen?
